Farm21 - Sasha Sykes


Sasha Sykes is an artist and designer who creates bespoke furniture through her company farm21.

Drawing inspiration from the rural and agricultural heritage of her native Co Carlow, Sasha works by combining modern processes with traditional materials & crafts and has been developing her style since 1995.

Her company now has addresses in Ireland, England and the USA.
Sasha's background is in Architecture (Edinburgh University MA, 1998) which can be seen in the clean, modern lines of her work. She also practices as an Interior designer and worked on a number of high end retail projects at London's Shopworks Design Ltd before going solo.

 As Sasha explains, "Our timber ‘lyric’ benches and tables are increasingly popular with our timber supply continually growing in scale and diversity. Wych elm, spalted beech, tiger-stripe ash and crab apple are just some of the unusual woods we have been working with lately. An interesting project in February 2005 involved placing a real diamond into the centre of an oval ash table for a show on Mercer Street NYC furthering the idea of contrasting and interesting materials within the realms of furniture."

"To this day, the bulk of farm21 organic material (straw, wood, lichen etc) is sourced from my family’s farm at Lisnavagh, in County Carlow, Ireland."
She is currently developing a licensed range of lamps and tables for Tempus Stet Ltd, due to be shown at 100% Design in London this September and marketed in the UK, Europe and The Middle East initially.

Her most widely recognized piece of work is the Straw Cube, which was one of the hits of the 100% Design Show in London (2002) and has been featured on the cover of both IDFX and Living Etc.

Her work has been covered by numerous prestigious publications in the UK and Ireland (Vogue, GQ, Arena, CN Traveller, Gardens Illustrated, Attitude, London Sunday Times, London Telegraph Magazine, London Evening Standard, The Irish Times, and Image Interiors), and The New York Times, the New York Post, Fine Furnishings International and Gotham magazine in the US.

Her clients include a number of Collectors and Society players on both sides of The Atlantic, and the farm21 range is also available through Base (Miami), Twentieth (LA) and ABC Carpet and Home (NYC, from September 2005)
Sasha is married to the writer Tom Sykes and moved back home to Lisnavagh in 2006. She is now running operations between London, Carlow and New York.
